Canadians live in a very large country - the soecond largest in land mass in the entire world. What makes us choose to live where we live? Why do we suffer rain, wind, cold, heat and all other quirks of nature?
Well, besides cold beer and warm hearts, Canadians are a peculiar folk, quick to share a story or a laugh with anyone who has the time to listen. And, Canadians are quietly proud of their country and their indivudual and distinct heritage.
Listen as I explore, tongue in cheek, some typically Canadian attributes.

Friends: This week, a quick look at the Canadian Football League (CFL). coming off one of the most successful seasons last year, the league hopes to use that success as a springboard to bigger and better things this year.
Of interest is the Vancouver experience. While the 60,000 seat downtown stadium undergoes needed upgrades to the roof, the Lions will play in a "temporary" facility constructed on the site of the original home of the BC LIONS - Empire Field, adjacent to the Pacific National Exhibition grounds.
Needless to say, the city is a buzz with the anticipation of a "back to the future" year - new to many and a trip back in time for some.
The first game is Father's Day - and it sounds like the weatherman will co-operate with sunny skies and warm temperatures (it is an outdoor field).

Big Daddy wears hockey jersey number 22, his sons wear 20 and 73. Each number has been picked because of a special meaning to the wearer. Don's hockey "idol" was Dave "Tiger" Williams, who played for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks - a hard working, marginally talented, big hearted player who wore the number "22". His sons numbers are explained on this week's podcast from www.donspodradio.com.
The reasons players pick and wear certain numbers are as varied as there are players in sports - sometimes a birthday, sometimes the number of a long retired idol, a special date - the reasons go on and on.
This week I try to explore but a few of the more famous numbers of some of our Hockey Idols and Legenda - Retrospective looks at Hockey Jersey Numbers!

This week, the World's Greatest Hoaxes.
In just a few short days the Winter Olympics of 2010 will begin with the opening ceremony and the lighting of the flame in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. And while many are concerned about the warm temperatures and lack of snow on local mountains, the folk at VANOC (the Vancouver Olympic Committee)are telling us all's ready for this grand spectacle.
Over the years, countries and in some cases, individuals, have developed (friendly) rivalries that surface at the games. This year's Olympics are no exception.
Join me as I explore some of these rivalries on this week's edition of Retrospective - heard on the 20's on the podcast from www.donspodradio.com and here in it's entirety.
Thanks for listening
Al Murphy (aka Canada's Favourite Little Irishman)
Over the annuls of time jobs traditionally done by men only have been taken on quite successfully, by women. When Deanna Brasseur was just a young girl, she dreamed of one day doing something that was at that time, out of reach for women - and through perseverance and plain hard work, she accomplished the task she had set out for herself.
Wondering just what set Deanna apart from other women of her generation. Well, listen and find out!
Thanks for being a part of the bestofmurphy family. I hope you enjoy this Retrospective commentary.

Canada's national sport, while still listed as lacrosse, is really HOCKEY. Everyone from coast to coast plays hockey, in rinks, on the street, in basements - in fact almost anywhere a stick and puck or ball can be handled and shot!
But, what is Canada's national bakery treat? What food do Canadians turn to after the big game, or before work, play or just "because."
Well, thanks to some shrewd marketing on behalf of a couple of prominent companies, we Canadians can now safely call the DONUT Canada's favourite bakery treat! Yes, the DONUT!! Look around! What fast food outlet is more prevalent on the landscape today?
This week I look into the (W)hole story behind the donut and some of the facts may amaze you!
Thanks for listening.
My Retrospective commentary is heard on the weekly show from www.donspodradio.com on the 20's and here in it's entirety.
And, until the start of the Olympic games in Vancouver, you can also hear my vignettes OLYMPIC FACTS, heard during the show.
See you next week

Here is the story of an inventor who changed the way we assemble, store, and distribute information - more specifically, the written word. Back in the annuls of time, copying documents was an arduous process, involving either retyping an original, with carbon paper between copies to make extra file or distribution copies, or by making a stencil and running copies on a Gestetner machine.
All that changed with Chester Carlson!
Listen to this most intriguing story.
Retrospective is heard on the 20 on the weekly podcast from www.donspodradio.com and here in it's entirety.
Enjoy!

Every week, I do a RETROSPECTIVE commentary on www.donspodradio.com and www.donspodradio.podomatic.com. Here are some of those commentaries from the archives.
Al
I am a semi-retired, former Human Resources Director, who shares a love of music with my good friend Big Daddy Donald Roberts. My full-time working career spanned 40 years and my current part-time career, as a Career Management Consultant, spans two days per week. On the other hand, my love of music spans decades of listening and performing with my brothers Tony & Gus as we swung (and still swing today) through a genre of music from 50s R&B to swing to Rock ˜N Roll to Folk. My association with Big Daddy dates to 1990 when we were business associates. Our relationship continues to be fueled today through our common interest in pod casting and my retrospective contribution to his weekly program. This effort has uncovered a whole new purpose for me in terms of time spent researching facts supporting commentaries and music that I eventually share with you. Its exciting! Like Big Daddy I too have a home studio, based in Fergus, ON (affectionately referred to by Big Guy as CKE) where my retrospective commentaries, or musical recordings originate. My commentaries are electronically transmitted to CKW (western headquarters) where they become part of the Donpodradio.com family.
